No Song, But Silence by Jonathan Nevair

by Justine Bergman

Today I’m honored to begin the Storytellers On Tour celebration of the epic conclusion of Jonathan Nevair’s sci-fi Wind Tide series with the kickoff of the No Song, But Silence Book Tour! We began this journey with Goodbye to the Sun, continued on with Jati’s Wager, and now we’re reaching our destination with No Song, But Silence (these titles though!). If you’re already a fan of the series, or just first hearing about it, I urge you to take a look at what our incredible hosts have had to say throughout. The holidays are right around the corner and that special sci-fi fan in your life would LOVE these, jussayin’…or maybe just pick up a few to treat yourself!

It’s always a pleasure to have Jonathan on the blog, and today he’s sharing a bit about the timeline of his Wind Tide series. Be warned, there are a few spoilers, but he graciously marked when and where. So, keep scrolling to learn more about the book and author, read the awesome post, and enter to win yourself a copy of No Song, But Silence, as well as ebooks of the entire series!

About the Book

The tide of justice ebbs. A mysterious and reclusive superpower threatens to extend its reach, colonizing new star systems for Wind energy and spreading a corrupt political empire. The People’s Army, once the hope for a new federation of allies in the Arm, has dwindled to a mere spectator in the fight for political control. Ailo’s role in its revolutionary fervor is over. The esoteric philosophy of the legendary Cin Quinti is her only concern now. But when an unimaginable threat sends a political shock wave through the Arm she must weigh the cost of self-preservation, hiding in the shadows as civilization falls to despotism and tyranny.

Light years away on Kol 2, a young librarian grows inspired by a mentor’s clandestine teachings. What he discovers with the newfound knowledge reveals a moral avalanche. The dubious and cruel political power corrupting his society must be exposed, but it will take a leap of faith to challenge an empire.

Keeping it Real – Character Age in the Wind Tide Series
by Jonathan Nevair

One issue for me in writing this series was the time jumps between novels and how they related to the age of the characters in the series. As an anthology trilogy, Wind Tide is constructed as three stories that connect but remain autonomous (to varying degrees). The books don’t run in a direct, linked chronology – several years pass between the point where one book’s plotline ends and the next book’s story starts.

This makes for fun math! There were times when I had to get out the calculator and be certain that the characters were the appropriate ages for their roles in each novel. At times, I found that I had to negotiate the timeline to ensure characters would be realistically old or young enough for their actions/behavior/decisions.

On the timeline below, each character has a birth date and is reported at their current ages in subsequent novels after each “time jump.”

One very interesting (and difficult!) aspect of Goodbye to the Sun was that Razor wrote her account of the events fifty-two years later than the POV of Keen Draden (that was wonderful when I wrote the first novel – it made for a beautiful literary device, but it became tricky to negotiate that POV time jump as the series progressed). I had to calculate the dates and make sure the chronology worked realistically with their birth dates in the subsequent two novels – it was NOT easy, let me tell you! There were times when I had to re-negotiate the plot lines of books 2 & 3 because aspects of the birth years of characters had to relate to the overall series plotline.

Perhaps you will find the timeline below interesting – if you have read the first two books, Goodbye to the Sun and Jati’s Wager, you’ll get to see the ages of the characters in those two novels. I know some readers like these types of things, so I wanted to share this!

WARNING: If you have not yet read No Song, But Silence you may not want to look too far – I included a *SPOILER ALERT* for you in case you want to stop scrolling down at a marked point so you don’t get too much information!

Jonathan Nevair

From the moment he saw Star Wars: Episode IV in the theater as a child, Jonathan’s eyes turned to the night sky and the capability of FTL drives to whisk him off to distant star systems. After two decades of academic publishing, he finally got up the nerve to write fiction and bring those worlds to life.

Jonathan lives in southeastern PA with his wife and rambunctious mountain feist, Cricket. When not writing and teaching, he spends his time chasing his dog through the woods and hoping he’ll be able to walk in space before he croaks.

Jonathan Nevair (he/him/his) is the pen name for Dr. Jonathan Wallis, Professor of Art History at Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia.
